Community Investment

At Canadian Natural, we are strongly committed to investing in the communities where we live and work. As members of the communities where we operate, Canadian Natural’s teams work together with our local stakeholders to understand their priorities and support those projects that have a direct impact on their quality of life and well-being. In this way, we can help local grassroots efforts that get right to the heart of the issues the communities care about, promoting long-term local economic growth and prosperity.

In 2018, we provided $15.3 million in community investments including corporate sponsorships, cash donations, employee giving, in-kind donations and funding for community-based economic development projects. Corporate Giving Programs

Our corporate giving program includes community donations and sponsorships, field matching and scholarship programs. Our community investment focuses on the following areas:

  • Health and wellness - Canadian Natural supports comprehensive service providers assisting families and children, including hospitals and community outreach programs. Examples of long-term commitments include the Canadian Women’s Foundation, Lloydminster Regional Health Foundation and Cornerstone in Aberdeen.
  • Sports and recreation - We provide funding for recreational facilities and youth sport initiatives across our operating areas. We have also been longtime supporters of the Bonnyville Pontiacs, an ice hockey team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League that runs the ‘RESPECT’ anti-bullying campaign for schools, reaching out to more than 1,000 students a year. We have also been supporting a disability soccer program led by the Aberdeen Football Club (AFC) in Scotland, in partnership with the Scottish FA and Scottish Disability Sport, to help increase participation and allow footballers with disabilities to compete at the highest level possible.
  • Education and training - We support local schools and universities improve infrastructure and enhance programs. Read our Education and Training section for more information.
  • Social and cultural events, and traditional practices - We support and participate in a broad variety of community events, including treaty days and pow wows. Also, our best efforts are made every year to help holiday wishes come true through Christmas community meals and hampers.

We are proud of our many employees who donate valuable time to assist with community projects. Canadian Natural supports employee volunteering in many ways ― through corporate matching of funds raised for selected programs and initiatives, management support of national campaigns such as United Way, and providing Company time. Building sustainable communities

Partnerships that promote health and wellness

APPLE Schools

Canadian Natural has a made a long-term commitment of $460,000 in funding to The APPLE Schools Foundation, helping schools promote healthy living in communities, particularly in remote areas, many of which are First Nations or Métis communities (Lac La Biche, Cold Lake, Glendon, Anzac, Conklin, Janvier, Fort McKay and Fort Chipewyan), as well as the program expansion into northeast British Columbia.

The 10-year-old program is research driven and improves the lives of more than 20,000 students annually across northern Alberta, Manitoba and Northwest Territories schools, working with parents, students and teachers to improve health behaviours. Students at APPLE schools incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into their diets, increase their physical activity levels and learn how to care for their mental health.

One of the schools implementing the program is Father R. Perin School in Janvier. Tracy Jones, the School Health Facilitator (SHF), has been working with school staff to raise awareness with the students about new foods and physical activities they may not otherwise have access to, and teaching them leadership and responsibility. School attendance has improved with a regular breakfast and snack program in place.

Creating value for years to come in northern Alberta

Canadian Natural is proud to support the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital Foundation, pledging $750,000 over five years towards a new regional hospital and cancer centre. The funds will be placed in an endowment fund that will be used to purchase equipment in perpetuity, allowing Canadian Natural to give back year after year.

Construction on the hospital is still underway, but will feature single in-patient rooms, an education facility for training nurses and other healthcare professionals, a state-of-the-art cancer centre, outpatient programs and a five-story parkade.

Rob Petrone, Superintendent, Field Operations at Canadian Natural, has been on the campaign committee for two years and has seen this initiative unfold from the beginning.

“I could not be more proud to be part of this initiative and work at a company that cares so much about the communities we live and work in,” said Rob. “The value many of our own employees, contractors and community members will receive for many years to come with this new hospital is a gift.”

A fresh start

Since 2014, Canadian Natural has been supporting the Fresh Start Recovery Centre in providing addiction treatment services to Indigenous men, helping 81 participants complete the recovery program to date.

"Canadian Natural was the first long-term corporate supporter of the Fresh Start Recovery Centre,” said Wayne Steer, Director of Fund Development. “Their support has helped many men find a better life through recovery. They say that this help has given them a second chance to be the men that they always knew they could be."

During his time at Fresh Start, Robert D was able to overcome his challenges and excel in his studies. Robert said that Fresh Start gave him hope and a second chance at life. It was this feeling of hope and wanting to share it that inspired him to enroll in the Addictions & Community Health Professional program at Sundance College. With support from Canadian Natural, Robert was able to earn his diploma in the 44-week program, with honors.

Supporting small villages and families in Africa

Canadian Natural’s operations in offshore C?te d'Ivoire (CDI) are located roughly 60 kilometres southwest of the city of Abidjan, CDI’s commercial centre, where we have an office. Natural gas from our Espoir field is the main source of electricity in the country.

We have been supporting local communities in CDI through different social projects aimed at improving quality of life, providing electricity and support to schools and hospitals, and helping local families. Our Abidjan Donation Committee coordinated employee initiatives to assist different organizations in 2018, including the local maternity ward, a nursery and the Red Cross' efforts to help people displaced by flooding. Safety beyond our worksites

The safety of the people we work with, their families and neighbours, is a shared core value for our Company and the communities where we work. We are proud to work with local first responders, to help provide a safe environment in our operating areas. Every year, we support fire departments and their exceptional work in these communities by contributing to efforts focused on updating facilities and equipment, and enhancing training and emergency services for the long-term safety of community residents.
